My wife was in the emergency hospital with a kidney stone, after being discharged from the emergency room and told that she could go home, she requested to Doctor Scott, the emergency attending doctor, that she be allowed to stay in the hospital due to her discomfort. The next day early in the morning she was feeling better, so very early in the morning we contacted the staff at Saint Joseph hospital at Big Ben, Riverview, of her decision of wanting to go home. Afterall, she had been discharged early that morning and the decision to stay at the hospital had been her's. We were told that Doctor Baker was the attending Urologist that morning and that we needed to wait for him to discharge her. The hospital didn't appear to be very eager to let her go. The first call was at around 7am, many, many calls after that and he still had not showed up for the discharge. We spoke to the attending administrator, the head nurse/manager and nothing. By midday nothing had happened and it appeared that they were only interested in making sure she stayed there so they could charge her more. My wife was starving, and the staff, nor the nurses or anyone seemed to give any care. By 2 pm we were very upset, hungry and very exhausted from being there, we asked for food and was told that there was an order of no food given to her. After I questioned the order and its validity they told us that they would call back. At around 2:30pm Doctor Baker entered the room exasperated, and without as much as a hello or washing his hands, he began to question my wife. There was no reason for my wife to remain at the hospital, she had been told she could go home early that morning by the emergency doctor with a prescription of pain meds and antibiotics. The pain was gone, and all she needed was some antibiotics and soft pain medication, no need for a lengthy hospitalization for that. Dr. Baker unbeknown to him that I once worked in the medical field, began to try to scare my wife by telling her that she could die. I objected and questioned him and he stomped out of the room upset and refused to discharge her. I caught him on the hallway and asked him if i could speak to him in private and he said sure, I questioned his diagnosis, and he got upset and began to try to create and escalate the situation into a hostile atmosphere at which point I terminated the conversation and left. I then overheard Dr. Baker telling the head manager to write something derogatory in the record, I objected and Dr. Baker then in a loud voice called me "aggressive" and I told him not to label me just because I was interfering with him and the hospital making money at my wife's expense and discomfort, not to mention the health risks of being in the hospital unnecessarily. I also told him that he was arrogant and unethical. He stomped off and refused to prescribed the antibiotics and the pain medication for my wife's ailment and didn't care one bit of any complications later on or her pain. This is the type of doctor that should be watch closely, the type of doctor that because the patient exercises its rights, will retaliate and try to cause pain and discomfort, refusing to treat and to prescribed medication and this is a violation of his OATH. My wife spent a whole two days without pain medication because he refused to treat her and just because we wanted to go home. After it was obvious to the hospital that we were going to walk out at about 3pm then they offered food to us, but by then it was too late and we went home. The Saint Joseph Hospital is complicit and guilty for what happened there that day, from the nurse manager, the administrator that morning and finally doctor Baker. All of them failed on their duties and to understand that the patient have RIGHTS! Dr. Baker should be shunned and avoided, this doctor forgot why a person becomes a doctor, he is all about what he wants and not what the patient wants, he is arrogant, ill mannered, and lacks good bedside manners, this doctor is unethical in my opinion and should be admonished by the hospital administration.
